[How to] Play Left 4 Dead Splitscreen on PC with xbox 360 controller.
Note: This procedure involves editing a game file; create a backup copy of the file before proceeding. Insert an Xbox 360 controller. Use a text editor to edit the "360controller.cfg" file in the "\left4dead\cfg folder" directory. Replace its content with the following cfg file: 360controller.cfg. [RapidShare - FileDropper] 1- Start the game. 2- Open the console and type: exec 360controller.cfg 3-Next set your split screen mode with the following console codes: ss_splitmode 1 ("Horizontal-Cut" for standard monitors) or ss_splitmode 2 ("Vertical-Cut" for widescreen monitors). 4- Connect to a server. Join the server with the console code: connect XXX.XX.XXX.XXX 2 5- You must now set the Xbox 360 controller to player two (with the light on the Xbox logo pointing to "2"). To do this, quickly unplug and reinsert the Xbox 360 controller while the map is loading. You can now play 2-Player Co-op mode in split-screen. |

Here are cfg files for different controllers:
360controller - in first post. PS2 controller - RapidShare - FileDropper PS3 controller - RapidShare - FileDropper Logitech Dual Action - RapidShare - FileDropper Logitech RumblePad 2 USB/Dual Action - RapidShare - FileDropper Two 360 controllers - RapidShare - FileDropper Two PS3 controllers - RapidShare - FileDropper And thanks to Wiggy Lechuck's post here at the steampowered forums, it is possible to play using non-PS3 or 360 controllers: You will need JoyID - RapidShare - FileDropper And PPJoy - RapidShare - FileDropper to get your controller working in player slot 2 if you don't have a second controller handy. |

To simplify Starting a game in SplitScreen mode, try Bootylactin's method [from the steampowered forums]:
1. Use notepad to create a new cfg file, name it 2players.cfg, and add the following Code and Configure to your liking: //ss_splitmode = 1 ("Horizontal-Cut" for standard monitors) //ss_splitmode = 2 ("Vertical-Cut" for widescreen monitors). //ss_enable = enables splitscreen //controller2 = the name of the controller cfg file you are using. //player2 = your buddy's name :) 2. To play 2 players split screen mode, just type exec 2players in the console and everything is ready to go. It's a nice shortcut that requires only a single line to initiate. ENjoy! |

yeah man... you will need to use those extra progs to get yer gamepad on player 2 slot.
With a 360 controller it was as simple as unplugging and plugging the controller back in, but with other controllers - you will need to play around a bit. Check the Steam thread linked in the first post. THey've exhausted every possible way to get two players gaming... good luck. |

Thank you

I have a wired xbox 360 controller on cracked l4d copy. Have done all the requirements for 2player offline coop in single player. No matter what I do, xbox 360 controller will not switch to 2 player. I have plugged and unplugged the thing a million times, and it still only allows for control of player 1 with both the controller and keyboard/mouse. Will someone please tell me another way to switch the controller to 2 player because the plug/unplug trick that apparently works for everyone else isn't working for me.

I have a ORIGINAL xbox controller (NOT THE 360 CONTROLLER) but i cant seem to find a pre-made config for it. Ive been experimenting with the xbox 360 controller configs but it doesnt get my controller to function fully. Ive gotten it to work slightly but the right analog stick doesn't do anything (in other words, i cant look around) but i can walk, shoot, duck, jump, switch and pickup weapons, but those actions are not tied to the proper buttons =[ can anyone give me a link or make a config that might work because i am hopelessly lost when it comes to this stuff =[
(and yes i have made sure that the controller is functioning properly) |

To all who have odd controllers with no current support. (I have the Razer Onza TE).
Use the program Pinnacle Game Profiler. It has the option to emulate a standard Xbox 360 Wired controller which is supported by the config files above. http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/ |
